You will need to purchase web space in order to store your website online, but this is a low annual fee and includes up to 500MB of server space, which is ample for the majority of websites.
If a huge number of visitors are accessing your site and it's putting a noticeable strain on our server or you need additional server space, there may be an increase in hosting costs.
You will need a domain name (e.g. www.yoursite.co.uk) for users to be able to access your website, but this is a very low annual fee.
You will pay slightly more for domain names ending in .com as opposed to .co.uk and there are many more domain name extensions available. If you would like to know more, click here.
You can check the availability of your chosen domain name(s) by using Fasthosts domain checker.
We can set up as many email addresses as you would like, such as [email protected] There is a very low annual fee per email account, but if extra space to store all of your emails is required on our server, the fee will increase.
There is no extra charge for email aliases, as there is no extra mail box on our server. Anything sent to an email alias, is forwarded straight on to another existing email account.
Will you want to access your email via POP3 or IMAP?
When you access your email via POP3, the emails are downloaded to your device (i.e. Computer/Tablet/Phone) and removed from our server. This saves space on our server, but the emails can still be read on the devices that have been used to check the email on.
IMAP keeps all of your emails on the server and therefore uses more server space. When you access an account via IMAP, if you read, delete or move emails into folders, the action occurs across all devices (i.e. Computer/Tablet/Phone) simultaneously.
We offer 100MB accounts, which we find are ample when using the POP3 account type set up.
We also offer 1GB email accounts, which are more suited when using the IMAP account type set up.
For those that prefer the IMAP account type set up, but require a lot more server space to store all of your emails, we can upgrade you to an Exchange account. Please contact us for more information.
By using software to access your email (i.e. Outlook/Mac Mail), you don't need to keep logging in and it allows you to take advantage of the POP3 account type set up, having emails downloaded to your device (i.e. Computer/Tablet/Phone) and removed from the server.
If you require assistance setting up your email account to work with email software, there will be an additional fee per email account and per device.
Web Mail is basically a website that allows you to check your email, by logging in and using an interface similar to other web based emails, such as Hotmail.
Web Mail can be convenient to use when needing to access your email on a device (i.e. Computer/Tablet/Phone) that hasn't had any email software set up for you, but used on a long term basis would have the same effect as using the IMAP account type set up, so may require an account upgrade for the extra server space required.
The majority of Content Management Systems and E-Commerce packages are database driven and require additional server functionality, space and resources, which will increase hosting costs.
You should also be aware that the speed a user can move from page to page, will also be reduced with a database driven website.
If you already have an active domain or web/email service with another provider, but would like us to take over, there are a few options.
Control of Domain Name and Web/Email Services - The complexity of transferring a domain, will vary depending on the domains extension. There may be disruption to email services.
Control of Web/Email Services Only - If you want to keep control of your domain name, we can point the Nameservers for your domain name to our server.
Control of Web Services Only - If you just want us to take over your web hosting services, the A Records for your domain name can be pointed to our server.
Control of Email Services Only - If you just want us to take over your email hosting services, the MX Records for your domain name can be pointed to our server.
To transfer a domain or web/email service to us, you will need access to your domain control panel.
If you didn't register the domain name and don't have access to the control panel for your domain name, we'd recommend contacting the person who did register the domain, to discuss getting access. You can often find out who this person is and their contact details, by checking the domain name via www.internic.net - International domains (.com, .net, .org) or www.nominet.org.uk - UK domains (.uk)
If the domain name is registered in your name, you should be able to contact the hosting company and request they release the domain name or provide you access.
Please be aware that this process can be problematic if the registered owner or hosting company resists relinquishing control.
If you are transferring your email service to us, all current email accounts will be suspended and need recreating, so you will need to backup any important emails before the transfer takes place.
For an additional fee, we can provide assistance backing up your emails.
If you decide to host the website yourself, we will provide you a zip file containing the website files and a database if applicable. This will only be done on receipt of full payment for the website and you will then be responsible for getting the website online yourself.
We can provide assistance in getting your website online for a low additional fee, although this fee may increase if your website requires database functionality or if problems arise due to misconfiguration of the server you are using.
